Oye-Ekiti Bank Robbery: 5-year-old Girl, Security officer Killed

A 5-year-old girl and a police officer were killed in a bank robbery incident that took place in Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti state today November 21st.

The robbers, about 10 in number, stormed the bank and began shooting sporadically. The little girl was hit by one of the bullets. The security officer was spotted by the robbers and they immediately opened fire on him, killing him immediately. The robbers made away with money from the bank’s vault and stole from customers.

According to a student of FUOYE, “The armed robbers shot indiscriminately during the invasion of the bank. They gained access to the bank after blowing off the security doors with dynamites.

“I cannot say if they made away with money or not, because I did not witness that, but a man and a girl of about five years were killed during the operation. Some people, however, said the robbers escaped with a huge sum of money. You know, this is a period that students of the university are paying through the bank.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Police Command, Caleb Ikechukwu, said the police were already on the trail of the robbers, adding that preliminary investigation was ongoing.

Ikechukwu, who confirmed that the robbers were able to gain access to the banking hall through the use of dynamites, however, said he could not confirm if they made away with money or not.

He stated, “I can confirm to you that there was a bank robbery. As I am talking to you, operatives of the Anti-Robbery Squad and the combined team of the 33 Police Mobile Force are trailing the armed robbers.

“Information at our disposal is that they escaped through the bush path. We are trying to see how we can catch up with them. By God’s grace, we will. Preliminary investigation is ongoing as per the number of casualties.
