US Vice President Mike Pence on Friday received the coronavirus vaccine, becoming the highest-profile world leader to be vaccinated for Covid-19. Earlier this month, the US approved Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine for emergence use.
Pence was administered a shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine on live television along with his wife Karen and Surgeon General Jerome Adams. The White House had announced earlier this week that Vice President Mike Pence will be vaccinated in the public eye in order to boost Americans’ confidence towards the vaccine.
An event was organised in an office suite in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building for the same. During the event, three medical workers from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center administered the Covid-19 vaccine to Mike Pence, his wife Karen and Surgeon General Adams.
Addressing the media after receiving the vaccine, Vice President Pence said, “As the Christmas Holiday approaches, this is always a season of hope. We gather here today at the end of a historic week to affirm to the American people that hope is on the way.
Terming the vaccine as “safe” and “effective”, Pence said that the first Covid-19 vaccine is being distributed in states across the country as part of ‘Operation Warp Speed’. Operation Warp Speed was launched by outgoing US President Donald Trump earlier this year.
However, outgoing US President Donald Trump is yet to become a recipient of the Covid-19 vaccine himself.
US President-elect Joe Biden, on the other hand, will receive a dose of the coronavirus vaccine next week.
